Has the race for second already been settled?
Remco Evenepoel enters the Alps second overall, 4:32 behind Tadej Pogačar. Isaac del Toro sits third at +6:51, with Paul Seixas fourth at +7:11.
That gives Remco a cushion of 2:19 over Del Toro and 2:39 over Seixas. After back-to-back stage victories, he has placed himself firmly in control of the race behind yellow.
But control is not the same as security.
Why might 2:19 be enough?
Remco does not need to match every attack or prove he is the strongest climber in the race.
He only needs to manage the gap.
Del Toro and Seixas must now take risks, while Remco can concentrate on pacing his own effort and limiting any losses. Even conceding 30 or 40 seconds on one climb would leave him with a meaningful advantage.
The pressure has changed sides.
Remco can defend. His rivals have to create the race.

Why could the Alps erase everything?
The next three mountain stages contain 12,850 metres of elevation gain.
Stage 18 brings 3,900 metres of climbing and finishes at Orcières-Merlette. Stage 19 contains another 3,500 metres before the first finish at Alpe d’Huez. Stage 20 then adds a brutal 5,450 metres, including the Croix de Fer, Télégraphe, Galibier and Col de Sarenne before returning to Alpe d’Huez.
Two minutes can look enormous on the results page.
In the high mountains, one badly managed effort can remove it in a single afternoon.
Who has the most to gain by attacking?
Del Toro is the nearest threat, but his position creates a tactical question for UAE.
Does he attack Remco and chase second, or ride more cautiously to protect UAE’s current places in first and third?
Seixas has less to defend. Sitting only 20 seconds behind Del Toro, he can use any battle between UAE and Remco to move onto the podium himself.
Remco may have the largest cushion, but he could also become the rider every rival watches.
Is Remco safe—or simply the clear favourite?
Chainline verdict
Remco has built enough time to survive a slightly weaker mountain day.
He has not built enough to survive a complete crack.
The time trial made him the clear favourite for second place, but the route still gives Del Toro and Seixas enough climbing—and enough opportunities—to turn defence into panic.
Remco controls second.
